EDINBURG, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team continued their hot streak on Friday with a hard fought, 4-3 win at UT-Pan American.
The Cardinals (10-3) picked up their 10
th win in their last 11 matches after taking the points at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. The team fell behind in doubles, but made up for it with outstanding singles play.
The Broncos (3-12) earned the lone doubles point of the match. Alejandro Sanoja and Juan Cruz Soria won 8-4 at No. 2 position while Sebastien Job and Joseph Bishop won 8-3 at No. 3 to secure the point.
The Cardinals started rolling in singles action.
Josip Smoljan (Citluk, Bosnia/Srednja Skola) blitzed Job at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-0 win. Shortly afterwards,
Jair Assuncao (Londrina, Brazil/Carmina Grabner) took care of Soria at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory and
Tucker Brown (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) knocked off Ricardo Hopker at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
The match came down to three matches that all went the distance. Chetan Panditi and Bishop each won in three sets for UTPA, but
Brandon Davis (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) came through for the Cardinals at No. 5 with a 5-7, 7-6, 7-0 win to clinch the match.
The Cardinals do not play again until March 29 when they travel to Southland Conference rival Nicholls State for a 10 a.m. start.
