SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team picked up a nice win on Saturday at cross-town rival UTSA, 4-3 at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Cardinals (8-3) were able to win what proved to be a crucial point in doubles. After losing at #3 doubles,
Jair Assuncao and
Tucker Brown won 8-7 (5) at #2 doubles over Yannick Junger and Boburjon Kamiljanov. Then,
Leonard Ivic and
Josip Smoljan defeated Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman, 8-6. The tandem of Rubio and Stillman entered the match ranked #33 in the nation.
In singles play, the points went back and forth. Matt Mussenden won at #6 singles for UTSA in straight sets but Assuncao quickly put the Cardinals back in the lead with a straight sets win at the #1 spot. Tomas Stillman tied the match at 2-2 after his win at #2 singles for the Roadrunners (6-10).
The next two matches to finish were at #3 and #4. First, Smoljan came back from a set down to defeat Rubio 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the third slot. Then, Brown followed with a 6-0, 6-7, 6-2 win over Diogo Casa to clinch the match.
The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday at 10 a.m. against Cameron.
