Box Score THIBODAUX, LOUISIANA – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team took an 8-point lead into halftime at Nicholls State on Saturday, but could not finish off the game in a 76-64 loss in Southland Conference action.
The Cardinals (8-18, 2-11) played well in the first half shooting 46 percent from the field while holding the Colonels to just 31 percent from the field. Nicholls lead 22-21 with 7:53 left in the first half, but UIW closed the half on an 11-2 run to take a 32-24 advantage into the break.
The second half went the way of the Colonels (15-12, 10-6) who made up the deficit in just 2:23. The last lead for the Cardinals came with 15:49 remaining and the last tie came at 44-44 with 13:20 to play. UIW still trailed by just three points with 9:42 remaining after a three-pointer by
Natalie Hessong (Corpus Christi/King HS), but Nicholls pushed the lead to double figures with a 10-2 run. The Cardinals would never get closer than eight points over the final six minutes of the contest.
The Cardinals shot 43.9 percent from the field, made 4-of-17 from three-point range and were 10-for-16 at the foul line.
Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) led the team with 15 points off the bench and she added six rebounds.
Katie Novak (Homer Glen, IL/Lockport Township HS) and
Joslinn Douglas (Austin/Del Valle HS) each had 11 points in the game.
Kosisio Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) had 10 points while her twin sister, Ify, had seven points, 11 rebounds and six assists.
The Colonels shot 45.6 percent from the field, made 5-of-17 from three-point range and were 19-of-24 at the foul line. Emani White exploded for 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 at the foul line. Jenny Nash had 15 points and six rebounds while KK Babin had 13 points and seven assists. They had two more rebounds than UIW and committed one fewer turnover.
The Cardinals close their season next Saturday at Abilene Christian.
