SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's and men's basketball teams host Houston Baptist University in a double header Southland Conference matchup on Saturday at the McDermott Center.
The women's game begins at 2 p.m. and will be followed by the men's game at 4 p.m. It is Teacher Appreciation Day on Saturday and any teacher or other school employee with a valid ID will be admitted to the games free of charge.
For the UIW women's team (8-13, 2-7), a tough defeat against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday added to a five game losing streak. The Cardinals top scorers,
Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) and
Ifunanya Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) are hoping to continue adding to the score sheet and lead the team back to winning ways on their home court. Whitehead is averaging 13.7 points and 5.3 rebounds while Mora is averaging 10.4 points and 7.0 rebounds.
The visiting Huskies of Houston Baptist (9-13, 5-6) have a total of three players averaging in double figure points, with junior forward Shanice Steenholdt leading the team with an average of 18.2 points overall and 18.8 points in the Southland Conference. She also leads the team in rebounds with an average of 9.5 per game.
The UIW men (17-5, 5-4) will come into the game having broken their first losing streak of the season against the Islanders. Holding off a late comeback allowed the Cardinals to take their twelfth home win of the season. Junior
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) continues to add to a great season, leading the team on offense with 19.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Sophomore
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) follows closely behind with an average of 17.1 points.
The Huskies men (4-19, 1-10) will be looking to break a seven game losing streak. Their leading scorer, Cody Joyce, places behind four Cardinals players in points per game average, posting a total of 11.0 points. Sophomore Dauson Womack leads the team in rebounds with an average of 4.7 per game.
