SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team picked up their fourth consecutive victory on Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 win over visiting UT-Pan American at the Mabry Tennis Center.
Despite the 5-2 score, the match was not decided until very late. The Broncs (2-7) took the lead after doubles play by winning at #2 and #3 to earn the lone point. In singles play, the Cardinals (4-2) made their move.
Josip Smoljan (Citluk, Bosnia/Srednja Skokla) and
Brandon Davis (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) each won their singles match in straight sets at #3 and #5, respectively. Joseph Bishop's straight set win at #6 singles for UTPA made it a 2-2 match with three singles matches remaining.
At #2 singles, UIW's
Leonard Ivic (Split, Croatia/Economic Administration) won 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 over Sebastien Job.
Jair Assuncao (Londrina, Brazil/Carmina Grabner) had his hands full at #1 singles against Juan Cruz Soria. He fell behind with a 6-3 loss in the first set, but battled back to win the second set, 6-2 and the third set 6-5 in a tiebreaker that went to 8-6. Similarly,
Tucker Brown (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) fell behind with a 6-2 loss in the first set at #4 singles. He came back to win the final two sets, 6-4, 6-3.
The Cardinals are off for 10 days and will be back in action on February 26 against Western Michigan at 11 a.m. at home.
