Broncs Crash Cardinals in Four Sets

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS—The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team dropped a non-conference four-set match against UT-Pan American Tuesday evening at the McDermott Center 25-23, 21-25, 25-17, 25-17.

The Cardinals never seemed to get untracked against the visiting Broncs.  UTPA took advantage of the uncharacteristic mistakes by UIW and got some fortunate bounces falling their way to pick up the win.

The Cardinals (8-18) and Broncs (6-20) exchanged leads five times in a very tightly played first set that witnessed 11 tied scores. The Broncs had 14 kills and five errors with a .310 hitting percentage in the set, while the Cardinals totaled 16 kills and committed six errors on .206 to drop the opening set.

For the second set the Broncs took the early lead 3-0, but after the Cardinals took a 5-4 lead on a Brittani Dear (La Vernia/La Vernia HS) kill, UIW led the rest of the way. The Cardinals did not have a great attack percentage in the set, but their defense limited the Broncs to eight kills in the set.

The third set went in favor of the Broncs from beginning to end.  They took five of the first six points and never gave the lead away.  They hit a tremendous .455 for the set, totaling 12 kills and only two errors.

The fourth set had a promising start for the Cardinals as Madison Williams (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) hit back-to-back aces to start the set and UIW took the first five points of the set, forcing the Broncs to call an early time out.  The Broncs came back from the timeout with a completely different mindset as they took the next four points and later went on a couple of 3-0 runs to ultimately take the set 25-17.

Dear posted a double-double, leading the Cardinals in both kills and digs with 18 and 15, respectively.  Williams handed out 40 assists to lead the team.  As a team, the Cardinals hit .155 for the match and had seven total blocks.  They had 48 kills and 45 digs.

Haley Durham led the Broncs with 15 kills while Mary Kate Clark and Maisy Munson combined for 39 assists.  Krysta Freitas led the team with 13 digs.  As a team, the Broncs hit .252 with 48 kills, 55 digs and 4.0 blocks.

The Cardinals are back in action Thursday night in a Southland Conference match up against Nicholls at 7:00 p.m. at the McDermott Center.
