SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team lost in straight sets to Northwestern State University 25-20, 25-14, 25-15 on Thursday night at the McDermott Center.
The Cardinals dropped to 10-19 overall and 6-9 in the Southland Conference with the loss and have one conference game remaining.
The Lady Demons (12-16, 9-6 SLC) dominated throughout the game. The Cardinals led 5-4 in the first set, but after that, the Lady Demons took the lead and never looked back as they took the set 25-20.
In the second set, the Lady Demons took the first four points of the set which foreshadowed what would happen the rest of the set and the match. They won the set by 11 points and took the momentum into the third set. The third set started evenly with the score tied 6-6, but the Lady Demons took six of the next seven points and ultimately took the set and the match.
Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) had a match-high 13 kills with a .370 hitting attack for the Cardinals.
Madison Williams (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) led the team with 19 assists while
Jordan Reifsteck (Allen/Oswego East HS) totaled 11 digs. As a team, the Cardinals hit .029.
Caiti O'Connell led the Lady Demons with 8 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Aubrey Davis and Bailey Martin led the team with 10 digs each and Emily Johnson dished out 19 assists. As a team, the Lady Demons had 10 service aces and a hitting percentage of .200.
The Cardinals finish their conference schedule Saturday at 2:00 p.m., when they face the first-place team, Stephen F. Austin at the McDermott Center. Prior to the match, senior
Meaghan Patterson (Helotes/O'Connor HS) will be honored as part of Senior Day.
