Ifunanya Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) became only the 11th player in University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball history to score 1,000 points in a career on Friday night at Rice, but she could not lead the Cardinals to victory in a 72-57 defeat at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Owls (7-6) used a 14-0 run in the first half to take a 2-point lead and extend it to a 16-point advantage. Â The Cardinals (6-6) would battle back to an 8-point deficit at halftime. Â UIW connected on five consecutive field goals at one point and cut the lead to five points, but went into the break down 33-25.
In the second half, the Owls quickly pushed the lead back to double figures. Â They led by as many as 21 points with 7:30 remaining in the game before settling on a 15-point victory.
Mora scored her 999th and 1,000th career points with 7:02 remaining in the game when she knocked down a pair of free throws. Â She finished the game with 11 points and six assists.
The Cardinals shot 34.6 percent from the field, made 4-of-10 from three-point range and were 17-for-25 at the foul line. Â
Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) led the team with 20 points and seven rebounds. Â
Joslinn Douglas (Austin/Del Valle HS) went 6-of-9 from the field en route to a 17-point performance. Â
Kosisio Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) led the team with eight rebounds.
The Owls shot 45.3 percent from the field, were 0-for-9 on three-point attempts and 14-of-15 at the charity stripe. Â For the first time this year Jessica Kuster did not lead the team in scoring, but she still had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Â Christal Porter led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds while going 8-of-10 from the field. Â Jasmine Goodwine provided a spark off the bench with 16 points and seven rebounds.
The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Southeastern Louisiana for their first Southland Conference game of the year.
