Cardinals Romp in New Orleans

Box Score NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – Behind a great defensive effort, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team picked up their first Southland Conference victory of the season in a 67-38 win at New Orleans on Saturday at Lakefront Arena.

The game was never in doubt as the Cardinals (7-7, 1-1) never trailed and they held a double digit lead over the final 30 minutes of the game.  The Privateers (0-15, 0-4) remained winless on the season and struggled to score throughout the game.

The Cardinals limited New Orleans to 19.3 shooting from the field and also forced 20 turnovers.  UIW dominated on the inside outscoring the Privateers, 40-14 on points in the paint.

The Cardinals had their best shooting performance of the season hitting on 48.1 percent of their field goals.  They went 4-of-11 from three-point range and were 11-of-18 at the foul line.  Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) went 9-of-11 from the field and scored a team-high 19 points.  Kosisio Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) added 14 points and nine rebounds while her sister, Ify, led the team with 10 rebounds.  Joslinn Douglas (Austin/Del Valle HS) came off the bench to dish out seven assists.

The Privateers were 11-of-57 from the field, 3-of-18 from three-point range and 13-of-20 at the charity stripe.  Octavia Wilson was the lone player to reach double figures with 11 points.  Raven Coleman led the team with 10 rebounds off the bench.

The Cardinals return home on Thursday at 5:30 for their first home Southland Conference game ever.  They will host Central Arkansas at the McDermott Center.
