Southland Opener for Women's Soccer

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team puts their perfect home record on the line on Sunday at noon in the Southland Conference opener against Sam Houston State at Benson Stadium.

The Cardinals (6-1-0) have been a juggernaut at home this year with a perfect 5-0 mark that includes wins over a pair of NCAA Division I programs.  The latest victory for UIW came on Thursday night in a 6-1 win over visiting UT-Permian Basin.  In that game, the Cardinals led 5-0 at the half before resting the majority of their starters in the second half.

The Bearkats (2-5-1, 0-1-0) played their conference opener on Friday and lost 2-1 at Abilene Christian.  Mariah Titus scored the only goal for SHSU giving her a team high four goals on the season.

This is the first ever meeting between the two teams and it is the Cardinals first year in NCAA Division I and the Southland Conference.  UIW is not eligible for postseason play, but is eligible to win a regular season conference title.

The Cardinals have outscored their opponents 26-7 on the season and have a balanced attack.  Seniors Katie Miller (Tyler/Tyler JC) and Sydney Solomon (Schertz/Randolph HS) lead the team with five goals apiece while freshman midfielder Abigail Koenigs (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) has four goals.  Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) is 6-1 on the season with a 0.99 goals against average.
