Cardinals Soar Past Kangaroos in a 3-1 Victory

Box Score KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI – University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team secured a promising win with a strong second half performance at UM- Kansas City Saturday night, winning 3-1 as the final result.

After a tough start to the season and coming off of two straight losses, the Cardinals (2-3) added an important away win to their record against the UMKC Kangaroos.  UIW outshot their opponents with thirteen shots to nine in a game that appeared to be evenly contested.

Both teams traded possession in the first half, but it was the Kangaroos who broke the score sheet from a penalty kick in the 28th minute, taken by English forward Jordan Rideout.

But, the Cardinals came out strong in the second half, and equalized within three minutes after Andrew Grossman (Arlington/Mansfield Summit HS) headed in a Jonathan Camarena (El Paso/Del Valle HS) cross.  Just five minutes later UIW took the lead when Joe Brown (Nottingham, England/The Becket School) slotted home a ball that was passed back to him inside the box from Victor Pinal (Dallas/Skyline HS).

The final goal of the match came in the 74th minute when Vinny Bailey (Southport, England/King George V) raced onto a Leon Taylor (Dallas/Plano West HS) pass and calmly placed the ball past the keeper into the back of the net. It was a nervous final ten minutes for the Cardinals as UMKC proceeded to launch long balls into the box in an attempt to reduce the deficit, but UIW held strong and defended their lead to the final whistle.

Jarred Kahan (Houston/Clear Brook HS) made four saves in goal for the Cardinals to secure the win.  His counterpart, Chris McGaughey made six saves in the loss.

The Cardinals are back in action next Sunday, when they head to Riverside, CA for a match against the University of California Riverside at 6 p.m.
