Volleyball Hosts Big 12 Rival

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team opens the 2013 home schedule on Monday night at 6 p.m. against Big 12 rival Texas Tech University at the McDermott Convocation Center.

The Cardinals are 3-2 on the season and looking for their first win against an NCAA Division I opponent.  They are coming off a tough five-set loss at UT-Pan American, but had some strong performances in that match.  Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) and Shaina Garza (San Antonio/Warren HS) each had 12.5 points while Sarah Cardenas (San Antonio/O'Connor HS) had a season high 27 digs.

The Cardinals hope to follow the example of Southland Conference rival Abilene Christian who knocked off the Red Raiders earlier in the season.  Texas Tech is 6-7 on the season, but has lost six of their last seven matches.  Breeann David and Aubree Piper are the top attacking threats for the team.  David is averaging 4.00 kills per set with a .242 attack while Piper is averaging 2.82 kills per set with a .291 attack.  Emily Ruetter runs with offense and is averaging 10.68 assists per set.  Rachel Brummitt is the top defender on the squad with 5.58 digs per set.

It will be "White Out Night" at the McDermott Center with Cardinals fans encouraged to wear white t-shirts.
