Cardinals Ice Cold in Loss

Box Score SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team shot just 25.5 percent from the field in a 48-36 loss on the road to Lone Star Conference rival Angelo State on Saturday. (Box Score)

The Cardinals (17-9, 13-7) were held to only six points in the final 11:36 of the game and the Belles (14-12, 11-9) closed on a 16-6 run to end the game.  In the first half, the teams traded the lead eight times with the final time coming on a three-pointer by Haylee Oliver with 13 seconds left in the first half to give ASU a 22-19 lead at the break.  The Belles would never relinquish the lead in the second half.

The Cardinals went 13-of-51 from the field and were only 5-of-25 from the floor in the second half.  They went 0-for-12 from three-point range marking the first time this year they did not connect from long range.  The team was 10-of-16 from the foul line and committed 16 turnovers.  Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) led the team with 11 points and eight rebounds.  Katy Cooke (Marble Falls/Marble Falls HS) chipped in with nine points and had three steals.

The Belles shot 30.8 percent from the field, made 4-of-18 from three-point range and were 4-of-14 at the foul line.  Lauren Holt led the team with 19 points and nine rebounds while Leah Lemaire added 10 points and nine boards.  Oliver and Karli Kellermeier each grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Cardinals played without leading scorer Ashlyn Green (Irving/Irving HS) who was attending a family funeral.  UIW is back in action on Thursday, March 7 at 6 p.m. against Tarleton State in the opening round of the LSC Tournament to be played in Allen, Texas.
