Green Leads Cards Past Wildcats

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – University of the Incarnate Word senior guard Ashlyn Green (Irving/Irving HS) made sure her last game at the McDermott Center was a memorable one as she led the Cardinals past visiting Abilene Christian University on Wednesday night, 68-53 in Lone Star Conference women's basketball action. Green poured in 27 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out four assists.  She went 11-of-17 from the field and drained all three of her three-point attempts.  The Cardinals (17-8, 13-6) entered the game ranked #10 in the latest NCAA Division II South Central Region poll while the Wildcats (20-5, 15-4) came in ranked #2 in the region and in first place in the conference.

The Cardinals started slowly on offense, but gradually heated up throughout the game.  They traded the lead back-and-forth with the Wildcats seven times in the first half and took a 36-31 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Cardinals quickly took control of the game.  After 3:15 the lead was up to 10 points and it ballooned to 20 points midway through the half.  UIW led by as many as 22 points before settling on a 15-point victory.   The Cardinals swarming defense forced ACU into 24 turnovers that turned into 25 points.

UIW shot 37.3 percent from the field, made 5-of-16 from three-point range and were 13-of-14 at the foul line.  In addition to Green, Joslinn Douglass (Austin/Del Valle HS) added 14 points and knocked down a pair of three-pointers.  Ify Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) added seven points and eight rebounds.  The team committed just 14 turnovers and had 17 assists.

The Wildcats shot 34.0 percent from the field, made 6-of-23 from three-point range and were 11-of-19 at the foul line.  Renata Marquez led the team with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.  Mack Lankford had 11 points and Kynzie Newman added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.  Kelsey Smith finished with six blocks and eight rebounds despite fouling out after only 17 minutes.  They pulled down two more rebounds than the Cardinals.

The Cardinals play their final regular season game of the year on Saturday when the travel to LSC rival Angelo State for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
