The Cardinals (15-8, 11-6) defeated the Lady Buffs (15-11, 11-6) earlier in the season on a nail-biter, but this one was not in doubt over the final 20 minutes. The Cards played well in the early going and led 13-11 after seven minutes thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Joslinn Douglass (Austin/Del Valle HS). West Texas A&M responded with a 20-6 run to take a double-digit lead. UIW closed to within five points, but the deficit was back to eight points by halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Buffs scored first on a three-pointer by Casey Land. They would expand their lead to as many as 21 points and never led by fewer than 11 points for the remainder of the game.
The Cardinals shot 37.3 percent from the field and made 5-of-10 from three-point range, but were only 8-of-16 from the foul line. Douglass led the team with 18 points while connecting on 4-of-5 from beyond the three-point line.
Michelle Hale (Albuquerque, NM/Rio Grande HS) added 11 points and five rebounds while making 5-of-8 from the field. The team had 33 rebounds and committed 19 turnovers.
The Lady Buffs shot 47.4 percent from the field, made 7-of-13 from behind the three-point line and were 9-of-12 from the free throw line. Devin Griffin and Chontiquah White each posted double-doubles. Griffin had 19 points, 10 boards, six steals and four assists. White had 16 points and 10 boards. Raven Gerald led the team with 20 points and dished out six assists. Land finished with 13 points and five assists. The team had 35 rebounds and committed 11 turnovers.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Eastern New Mexico.
