Box Score CANYON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word finished the weekend with a 58-43 loss against Angelo State University at the Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic hosted by West Texas A&M on Saturday. The Cardinals went 0-2 at the tournament.
The Cardinals (5-3) never led against the Rambelles (4-3) who suffocated the UIW defense in the first half. The Cardinals went 7-of-25 from the field and were 1-of-6 from three-point range in the first half. The Belles led 12-9 with 9:10 remaining in the first half and then held UIW to four points over the next six minutes and eventually led by as many as 17 points. The Cardinals closed the half on a 5-0 run to make it 30-18 Angelo State at halftime.
In the second half the Cardinals were unable to ever make it a single digit lead. They pulled to within 11 points with 12:02 remaining in the game, but the Belles responded with a 10-0 to effectively end thoughts of a victory for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals finished the game shooting 32.1 percent from the field, made 5-of-14 from three-point range and were 4-of-5 at the foul line. UIW entered the game averaging 37.0 free throw attempts per game.
Natalie Hessong (Corpus Christi/King HS) led the team with 15 points off the bench on 5-of-9 shooting from three-point range. Ify Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) and
Alyssa Ward (Palmetto, FL/Palmetto HS) combined for 11 assists. The team had 28 rebounds and committed 13 turnovers.
The Belles shot 47.1 percent from the field, made 9-of-20 from three-point range and were 1-of-4 at the foul line. Amanda Weaver led all players with 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from three-point range. Rochelle Norris has 12 points off the bench and Leah Lemaire finished with 10 points. Hillari Adam grabbed nine rebounds. They committed 16 turnovers and had 38 rebounds.
The Cardinals are back in action on December 10 at Arkansas-Little Rock for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
