Cardinals Handle Georgia State

Box Score ATLANTA, GEORGIA – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer closed out their most successful weekend of the season with a 4-1 win at Georgia State on Saturday evening.  It made for a 2-0 weekend after a win at Belmont on Thursday night.

The Cardinals (6-5-1) scored a pair of goals in each half en route to their largest margin of victory on the season.  The Panthers (8-8-1) had won their previous three games, including a 2-0 victory over then #9 Furman University on October 23.

The Cardinals opened the scoring in the ninth minute when freshman Ben Conway (Wigan, UK/Hawkley Hall) received a pass from Victor Pinal (Dallas/Skyline HS), turned and fired into the lower right corner of the goal.  It was his second goal of the season.

Pinal added his second assist of the game in the 35th minute.  He started the play by sending a pass out wide to Alex de la Garza (Mission/Sharyland HS) who quickly crossed it in front of the net where defender Uros Ceglaj (Ljubljana, Slovenia) headed home his first goal of the season.

At the start of the second half Dylan Kelly (Tuscon, AZ/Salpointe Catholic HS) made it 3-0 in favor of the Cardinals.  He pounced on a loose ball that was bouncing around the box and slotted it into the bottom right corner of the net at 52:32.  It was his first goal of the season.

The Panthers got on the board when Neil Rajendran fired a great shot from inside the 18-yard box into the top left corner of the net.  It closed the gap to 3-1 at 68:50.

The final goal of the game came from de la Garza in the 83rd minute.  Placide Buduri (San Antonio/Clark HS) sent a pass to Vinny Bailey (Southport, Eng./King George V) who sent in a perfect cross giving de la Garza an easy tap in for his fifth goal of the season.

The Panthers took 15 shots and earned 13 corner kicks while the Cardinals took 12 shots and two corner kicks.  UIW converted on all four of their shots on goal.  Jarred Kahan (Houston/Clear Brook HS) made a season high eight saves to earn the win for UIW.

The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Loyola University of Chicago.
