Lady Buffs Top Cardinals

Box Score CANYON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team dropped their first game of the West Texas A&M Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic on Friday to the hosts, 71-51.

The Lady Buffs (5-0) jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first six minutes of the game.  The Cardinals (5-2) were able to get as close as six points on two different occasions in the first half, but trailed 31-20 at halftime.  In the second half, a 19-2 run by WTAMU put the game away.

The Cardinals shot 38.3 percent from the field, made 2-of-9 from three-point range and were 13-of-19 at the foul line.  Ify Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) continued her strong play with another double-double getting 17 points and 11 rebounds.  She went 7-of-11 from the floor and now needs only 39 points to become the 11th player in the program's history to score 1,000 career points.  Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) came off the bench to lead the team with 19 points and added nine rebounds in a season high 34 minutes of action.  UIW finished the game with 36 rebounds and 24 turnovers.

The Lady Buffs connected on 41.8 percent of their field goal attempts, made 8-of-28 three-point attempts and were only 7-of-19 at the charity stripe.  Chontiquah White led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds while Madison McLain added 12 points off the bench on four three-pointers.  Raven Gerald dished out a game high eight assists and had three of the team's 19 steals.  Overall, the Lady  Buffs finished the game with 45 rebounds and 17 turnovers.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at noon against Angelo State in their second and final game of the tournament.
