Box Score HOUSTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team outlasted University of St. Thomas on Sunday afternoon with a 71-67 win in overtime.
The Cardinals (4-0) scored the first 11 points of the game and led by as many as 15 points in the first half after a layup by
Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) with 3:42 remaining in the half. However, the Celts (3-2) responded by closing the half on an 8-1 run to make it 32-24 Cardinals at halftime.
The hosts kept the momentum going at the start of the second. They opened on a 9-0 run and took their first lead of the game after a layup by Kirstin Lee with 16:41 left in the game. The Celts would maintain a small lead for most of the next nine minutes until another Whitehead layup gave the Cardinals a 49-48 lead with 7:19 left in regulation.
The final minute of regulation proved to be a hectic one. With UIW leading 62-58, Maghen Lormand drained a three-pointer for UST to make it a 1-point game. Following a miss by the Cardinals, Gaby Guzman drew a foul and tied the game with five seconds left on her first free throw attempt. She would miss the second attempt, but Chelsea Davis grabbed the rebound and Lormand's last second three-pointer was off the mark.
In overtime, the Cardinals never trailed. Ify Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) scored on a conventional three-point play on their first possession to give UIW a lead they would not relinquish. The Cardinals led by five points with 14 seconds left, but still needed a pair of free throws by
Joslinn Douglas (Austin/Del Valle HS) with five ticks remaining to secure the win.
The Cardinals shot 38.3 percent from the field, made 3-of-17 from three-point range and were 22-of-29 at the charity stripe. Douglas led the team with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists while Kosy Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) had 16 points and seven boards. Whitehead came off the bench to score 10 points and grab nine rebounds. Ify Mora led the team with 13 rebounds to help UIW post a nine rebounds advantage in the game
The Celts shot 38.2 percent from the field, made 7-of-19 from three-point range and were 8-of-13 from the foul line. Davis led the team with 16 points and nine rebounds. Guzman added 12 points and Lormand had 11.
The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. against Our Lady of the Lake at the McDermott Center.
