Box Score HOUSTON, TEXAS – A late 12-1 run helped propel the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team to an 84-73 win over Texas Wesleyan University in a game played at the University of St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon.
A banged up Cardinals (3-0) team was missing one starter and another was injured during the game. Seniors Joslinn Douglass (Austin/Del Valle HS) and
Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) came through in a big way for the team while freshman
Natalie Hessong (Corpus Christi/King HS) made the most of her first real action at the collegiate level.
Douglass had a phenomenal game with a career high 27 points while draining 15-of-16 from the foul line and knocking down 5-of-10 shots from the field. Whitehead came off the bench and scored 17 of her 26 points in the second half. She finished the game shooting 9-of-15 from the field while making all seven of her free throw attempts. Hessong came through with 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range in 27 minutes off the bench.
The Cardinals shot 39 percent from the field, but made 7-of-14 three-point attempts and 31-of-35 from the foul line, including a perfect 18-for-18 in the second half. The team was outrebounded by two, but made up for it by forcing 22 turnovers while committing 13.
The Rams (3-4) shot 52.7 percent from the field, made 3-of-9 from three-point range and were 12-of-13 at the foul line. Takoia Larry led the team with 25 points and seven rebounds, but committed eight turnovers. ToiEasha Cooper added 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and handed out five assists.
The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Thomas.
