Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team gave their fans something to cheer about on Friday night with a 5-0 win over Southland Conference rival Northwestern State on Senior Night at Benson Stadium.
The win may have been the best all-around match of the season for the Cardinals (10-6-2, 4-5-2) who scored early and scored often while also playing great back line defense and getting some nice saves from goalkeeper
Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS).  UIW scored three times in the first 12:39 of the contest and then added a pair of second half goals for good measure to complete the whitewash of the Lady Demons (6-11-1, 4-6-1).
For the Cardinals, all four seniors played important roles in the victory.
Sarah Flores (Harlingen/South HS) scored a pair of goals to give her five on the season.  Her first came thanks to a smart through pass from fellow senior
Sydney Solomon (Schertz/Randolph HS) that put her in space and she ripped a shot past the goalkeeper at 5:41.  Her second goal came seven minutes later when she corralled a corner kick by senior
Katie Miller (Tyler/Tyler JC) and drilled a shot into the top corner to make it 3-0.
In between both of Flores' goals was a brilliant goal by
Amanda Watkins (San Antonio/Brandeis HS), her fourth of the season.
Abigail Koenigs (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) set up Watkins with an excellent pass down the left side allowing her to run to the ball, take two touches and fire a shot across the goal mouth into the lower right corner of the net at 10:22.
In the second half, Solomon went 1-on-1 to score a goal in the 63
rd minute.  She dribbled down the right sideline and then made a nice cutback move and fired a shot from just inside the box with her left foot that deflected off a defender and over the goalie for her six goal of the season.
The final goal went to freshman
Ashley Crabbe (San Antonio/Reagan HS) who was making only her fourth appearance of the season.
Kathryn Mundy (Houston/Pope John XXIII) gained possession of the ball deep on the right hand side and lofted a perfect crossing pass to Crabbe who headed it home at 74:03.
The final senior in the game was defender
Sarah Parker (San Antonio/Marshall HS) who did not score, but played well in central defense.  She cleared the ball on numerous occasions and limited the Demons to just 10 shot attempts in the game.  Whenever the visitors did manage a shot, Kowalik was there for the save finishing with six on the night to secure her third straight shutout.
The Cardinals close out the season on Sunday at 1 p.m. against the top team in the SLC, Stephen F. Austin.  It will be the final game of head coach Tina Patterson's 20-year career with the Cardinals.  The win tonight gave Patterson her 16
th season with double digit victories.
