Cardinals Defeated in OT

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word suffered a 3-2 double overtime defeat at the paws of the University of Central Arkansas on Sunday at Benson Stadium.

The first half was just a warm up for both teams as the Bears (6-4-2, 3-1) had one shot in comparison to eight for the Cardinals (8-4, 2-3). However, the second half was the quite eventful. UIW broke the 0-0 tie with a header by Abigail Koenigs (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) from the free kick of Sarah Johnson (Austin/Home School) just five minutes into the half. Central Arkansas retaliated with a goal from Sara Perlman as she took on the UIW keeper and chipped her after a pass from Adriana Lucar.

The Cardinals found another goal from UIW leading scorer Katie Miller (Tyler/Tyler JC) when she received a cross from senior Sydney Solomon (Schertz/Randolph HS) and she finished the goal once the pass was past the UCA keeper. The Bears tied the game in the 80th minute when Kristin Pollard ran past the UIW defense and scored on the run unassisted.

For UIW, it was their first overtime game of the season. Both teams were a little cautious in the first overtime period. Miller was the only player to take a shot in the first overtime.

Tension was running high in the second with multiple changes of possession. The game ended bitterly for the Cardinals when UCA's Lauren Trueheart finished the game with a golden goal off a free kick from outside of the 18-yard box. The ball went over the head of a four-player wall and hit the ground to bounce in the top right corner just out of reach of the UIW keeper.

The Cardinals attempted 21 shots in the game compared to only six for the Bears and UIW also earned three more corner kicks than the visitors. The Bears used a pair of goalkeepers that combined to make 10 saves in the match.

The Cardinals will take the road again for their game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this Friday at 4 p.m. They will return back home on Sunday to play Houston Baptist University at 1 p.m.
