Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team notched an impressive victory over visiting Southland Conference rival Oral Roberts on Friday night at Benson Stadium, 1-0.
The Cardinals (8-3, 2-2) held possession for the majority of the time over the first place Golden Eagles (8-3, 3-1), but neither team was able to create many scoring opportunities. The UIW central defense of
Elizabeth Washington (Frisco/Centennial HS) and
Sarah Parker (San Antonio/Marshall HS) made life difficult on ORU's forwards and limited the Golden Eagles to a total of seven shots in the contest.
After an even first half, the Cardinals started to create more chances in the second half. In the 69
th minute,
Katie Miller (Tyler/Tyler JC) drew a foul in the box giving UIW and penalty kick opportunity. Unfortunately, Maddie Rhodes made the save for ORU on
Sarah Flores (Harlingen/South HS) PK attempt.
The Cardinals did not let the miss deter them and two minutes later Miller fired a shot from near the top of the box that bounced and then deflected into the goal off a diving Rhodes at 71:24. It was Miller's team high seventh goal of the season.
One of the big stories of the game was substitute goalkeeper
Karly Brightwell (Houston/Elkins HS) entering the game at halftime after starter
Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) was injured in the first half. Brightwell made a number of key plays down the stretch including a pair of saves to preserve the victory.
The Cardinals outshot the Golden Eagles, 12-7 in the game and earned five more corner kicks.
The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Central Arkansas.
