Cardinals Fly Past Golden Eagles

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team notched an impressive victory over visiting Southland Conference rival Oral Roberts on Friday night at Benson Stadium, 1-0.

The Cardinals (8-3, 2-2) held possession for the majority of the time over the first place Golden Eagles (8-3, 3-1), but neither team was able to create many scoring opportunities.  The UIW central defense of Elizabeth Washington (Frisco/Centennial HS) and Sarah Parker (San Antonio/Marshall HS) made life difficult on ORU's forwards and limited the Golden Eagles to a total of seven shots in the contest.

After an even first half, the Cardinals started to create more chances in the second half.  In the 69th minute, Katie Miller (Tyler/Tyler JC) drew a foul in the box giving UIW and penalty kick opportunity.  Unfortunately, Maddie Rhodes made the save for ORU on Sarah Flores (Harlingen/South HS) PK attempt.

The Cardinals did not let the miss deter them and two minutes later Miller fired a shot from near the top of the box that bounced and then deflected into the goal off a diving Rhodes at 71:24.  It was Miller's team high seventh goal of the season.

One of the big stories of the game was substitute goalkeeper Karly Brightwell (Houston/Elkins HS) entering the game at halftime after starter Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) was injured in the first half.  Brightwell made a number of key plays down the stretch including a pair of saves to preserve the victory.

The Cardinals outshot the Golden Eagles, 12-7 in the game and earned five more corner kicks.

The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Central Arkansas.
