Cardinals Pick Up Late Victory

Box Score NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE – A Victor Pinal (Dallas/Skyline HS) goal in the 88th minute gave the vising University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team a much-needed 3-2 win at Belmont University on Thursday afternoon.

The game was originally scheduled for 6 p.m., but with thunderstorms scheduled to hit the area it was agreed that the teams would kick off at 3:30 instead.  The Cardinals (5-5-1) and the Bruins (5-9-2) played through a light rain and moderate wind throughout the contest.

The Bruins opened up the scoring just 12 minutes into the game.  Alfred Edmonds set up Nico Olsak who slotted a goal past Jarred Kahan (Houston/Clear Brook HS) at 12:11.  UIW tied the game 19 minutes later when Alex de la Garza (Mission/Sharyland HS) rifled a shot from 12 yards out past a diving Grayson Rector to the far corner at 31:22.  He was set up by a nice pass from Ben Conway (Wigan, UK/Hawkley Hall).

Sixteen minutes into the second half, the Cardinals took their first lead of the match.  Vinny Bailey (Southport, Eng./King George V) delivered a high cross into the box that Pinal brought down and hammered into the net from the 6-yard box.  The goal came at 61:18.

The Cardinals hoped the 2-1 lead would be enough to get the victory, but the Bruins kept on attacking.  Alfred Edmonds evened the score at 2-2 after converting on an assist by AJ Arnold at 82:11.

Neither team was able to mount much of an attack over the next five minutes and it looked like extra time would be needed.  Fortunately, the Cardinals put together a brilliant run of play that led to the game-winning goal.  Bailey started the attack by playing it wide to Conway on the left flank.  Conway dribbled down the sideline and then whipped a low cross into the box and Pinal connected with a sliding kick for the game winner with only 2:05 left on the clock.

"It's good to get a result because I don't think we played well the last few games," said UIW head coach Vince Martinez.  "I'm happy with the way we played today when you consider the tough weather conditions."

The Cardinals attempted 15 shots to only 10 for the Bruins and Martinez cited the play of the freshman Conway as being a key to the team's victory.  The two goals give Pinal five on the season and he now leads the team with 13 total points.  Bailey picked up his first assist of the season and is second on the team with 11 points.  De la Garza notched his fourth goal of the season and it was the first two assists of Conway's career.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at Georgia State.  The game begins at 7 p.m.
