LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team are back in action this weekend as they cross over state lines to Louisiana to face McNeese State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Lamar University on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Southland Conference action.
After a run of two losses added a dent to their record, the Cardinals (9-6-0, 3-5-0) are hoping to come bouncing back this weekend as they head to Louisiana for more SLC action.
On Friday they are set to face the MSU Cowgirls (5-10-1), a team who have yet to win a conference game with a 0-8 record. With their opponents outscoring them 23-22 overall, the Cowgirls goalkeeping duo of Lauren Sestak and Maggie Marks seem to be the key ingredient to the side, with Sestak recording 43 saves and Marks recording 34.
Only two days later, UIW are back on the field in a game that will see a Cardinal vs Cardinal match up. Although the Lamar Cardinals (6-9-1, 3-5-0) are tied with UIW in conference standings, UIW lead in goals scored per game with 2.50 to Lamar's 1.50. In the defense, Incarnate Word goalkeeper
Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) has conceded a total of 18 goals whilst Lamar's goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot has conceded 27.
With only more one win being the difference between a losing and winning season and each side appearing to be evenly matched, the games are set to be full of excitement as the Cardinals hope to make their mark in the Southland Conference as a new Division I side.
