Cardinals Lose 3-1

Box Score ABILENE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team gave up two first half goals and were unable to comeback in a 3-1 loss at Southland Conference rival Abilene Christian on Sunday.

The Wildcats (13-3-1, 7-3) struck early when Whitley Lindholm unlocked the Cardinals (9-6, 3-5) with a nice through pass up the middle of the field to Andrea Carpenter who slotted a shot past UIW goalkeeper Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) at 14:11.  A little over 20 minutes later the Wildcats made it 2-0 when Carpenter headed home a long pass from Kelsie Roberts at 34:50.  ACU outshot the Cardinals 11-3 and earned five more corner kicks in the first half.

The Wildcats made it a three-goal advantage less than three minutes into the second half.  Emily Sumrall headed in an Ashley Craig corner kick at 47:25 to create an insurmountable lead for the Cardinals to overcome.

The Cardinals finally got on the scoreboard in the 81st minute when freshman midfielder Abigail Koenigs (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) dribbled from the end line to the six yard box and shot diagonally over Kelsey Dombrowski's head.  It was her seventh goal of the season.  UIW posted a strong attack in the second half with 14 shots and finished the game with the same amount of shots at the Wildcats, 17.

Dombrowski picked up her eighth win of the season and made five saves in goal for ACU.  Kowalik allowed three goals and had three saves in 54:31 for the Cardinals.  Karly Brightwell (Houston/Elkins HS) played the final 35:29 and made two saves without allowing a goal.

The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday at McNeese State at 7 p.m.
