Women Want Win

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team closed out 2012 on a five game winning streak, but since coming back from the Christmas break they have lost two games.  They will attempt to end that streak on Thursday night when they host Lone Star Conference rival West Texas A&M at 5:30 p.m. in the McDermott Center.

The Cardinals (7-4, 3-2) continue to lead the conference in scoring defense at 61.2 points per game, but have struggled on the offensive end.  They are making only 36.0 percent of their field goal attempts for the season.  The team has done a good job of getting to the free throw line and forcing turnovers.

The trio of Ashlyn Green (Irving/Irving HS), Ify Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) and Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) are each averaging over 10 points per game.  Green leads the team with 11.6 points per game and the conference with 3.5 steals per game.  Mora averages nearly seven free throw attempts per game and is on pace to set the school record for most free throws made in a season.

The Lady Buffs (6-8, 2-3) struggled early in the season, but have won four of their last five games.  They have three players averaging at least 13 points per game.  Chontiquah White leads the team with 14.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while shooting 54.2 percent from the field.

The Cardinals are 1-5 all-time against the Lady Buffs, but that one win came in the LSC Tournament semifinals last year.
