The Cardinals (12-5, 8-3) controlled most facets of the game, but the Javelinas (3-14, 1-10) put up a strong fight. The visitors opened the game by knocking down their first five shots and the teams were square at 12-12 with eight minutes to play in the first half. The Cards subbed in post
Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) and she immediately scored five straight points and UIW closed the half on an 18-8 run.
In the second half, the Cardinals scored on their first possession, but then the Javelinas scored the next seven points of the game to close to within 32-27 with 17:18 to play. The Javelinas remained within 10 points of the Cardinals until a layup by Whitehead gave UIW a 45-34 lead with 8:17 remaining. From there,
Ashlyn Green (Irving/Irving HS) made sure the Javelinas had no thoughts of an upset as she scored 10 points down the stretch to put the game away.
The Cardinals shot over 40 percent from the field for only the second time this season. They connected on 40.7 percent of their shots, made 2-of-11 from three-point range and were 13-of-15 at the foul line. Green finished with 20 points, six rebounds and five steals as she went 6-for-6 at the charity stripe. Whitehead added 13 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Michelle Hale (Albuquerque, NM/Rio Grande HS) led the team with eight rebounds. Ify Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) added eight points, four rebounds, four assists and two blocks. They had 33 rebounds and forced the Javelinas into 26 turnovers.
The Javelinas shot 37.5 percent from the field, made 4-of-11 from three-point range and were 7-of-11 at the foul line. Kaitlyn Lowen led the team with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals. Rita Banaszczak added nine points.
The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday at LSC rival Midwestern State at 5:30 p.m.
