Defense Key for Cards

Box Score KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team struggled on offense on Wednesday night, but they played outstanding defense in a win over Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M-Kingsville, 57-33 at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.  (Box Score)

The Cardinals (11-5, 7-3) held the Javelinas (3-13, 1-9) without a field goal for a 19:14 stretch from the 10:45 mark of the first half when Madara Gulbe hit a three-pointer to make it 15-13 Javelinas until Ashley Viera connected on a three-pointer with 11:31 remaining in the second half to cut the UIW lead to 41-25.

The first half was a sloppy affair for both squads as they combined to shoot 22.4 percent from the field and commit a total of 29 turnovers.  The Cardinals jumped out to an early 11-2 lead, but the Javelinas were able to take the lead after a 10-0 run.  UIW would put the clamps on the Javelinas for the remainder of the half and took a 25-19 lead into the break.

The Cardinals opened the second half with a 16-3 run to take a 41-22 lead.  They would never be threatened the remainder of the game and held a 20-point lead for the final eight minutes.

The Cardinals shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and finished at 37.7 percent for the game.  They were 3-for-10 from three-point range and went 14-of-17 at the foul line.  Ashlyn Green (Irving/Irving HS) led the team with 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals in only 22 minutes of action.  Lauren McKinney (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.  The team outscored the Javelinas 25-9 on points off turnovers.  They forced 28 turnovers and had 17 steals in the game.

The Javelinas shot only 21.2 percent from the field, made 4-of-14 from three-point range and were 7-of-12 at the foul line.  Gulbe and Viera each had eight points to lead the team while Brittany Selby grabbed six rebounds.  The Javelinas had four more rebounds than the Cardinals.

The Cardinals and Javelinas will matchup again on Saturday at 2 p.m. at UIW's McDermott Center.
