SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – University of the Incarnate Word senior
Ashlyn Green (Irving/Irving HS) was named the Lone Star Conference Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this year on Monday.
Green, a three-time Player of the Week winner this year, was the leader of a stout Incarnate Word defensive effort last week. The Cardinals allowed just 44.5 points per game in their two victories over West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico. With the team trailing WT in the final 30 seconds, Green hit a jumper in the lane with 25 seconds left to make it 51-50 UIW and then she blocked a potential game-winning three-point attempt with seven seconds left to help secure the win. She came back with 11 points and a team high seven rebounds while helping to limit ENMU to 30.8 percent shooting in a 64-39 win. She averaged 10.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals per game for the week.
Green and the Cardinals (9-4, 5-2) will look to extend their winning streak to three with a match up against Lone Star Conference rival Abilene Christian on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Moody Coliseum.
The Cardinals lead the conference in scoring defense as they are allowing 58.6 points per game. They are tops in the LSC in steals per game (11.5) and turnover margin (+6.00). Green leads the team with 11.3 points per game and she leads the conference with 3.5 steals per game.
Abilene Christian is tied for third place in the conference with the Cardinals and has won their last three games. The Wildcats (10-3, 5-2) have four players averaging at least 11 points per game. Renata Marquez leads the Wildcats with 12.2 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game while contributing defensively with 20 steals on the season.
Last year, the Cardinals beat the Wildcats on the road, but had trouble sealing the deal at home and ended up with a 17-point loss.
