Women Roll to Victory

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team rolled to an easy 64-39 win over visiting Lone Star Conference rival Eastern New Mexico on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center. (Box Score)

The Cardinals (9-4, 5-2) turned a close game into a blowout with a 23-5 run that covered the final three minutes of the first half and first seven minutes of the second half.  The team received contributions all the way up and down the lineup as they shot over 40 percent from the field for the first time this season while dominating the interior with 16 second chance points.

The Cardinals only forced the Zias (3-12, 2-5) into 18 turnovers in the game, but turned those into 30 points.  Overall, the defense was strong as they limited the visitors to 30.8 percent shooting from the field and grabbed 12 more rebounds.

UIW shot 42.3 percent from the field, made 5-of-11 from three-point range and were 15-of-19 at the foul line.  Lauren McKinney (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) led the squad with 14 points and five boards while going 7-for-8 at the charity stripe.  Ashlyn Green (Irving/Irving HS) had another solid performance with 11 points and a team high seven rebounds.  Katy Cooke (Marble Falls/Marble Falls HS) chipped in with 10 points.

The Zias went 16-of-52 from the field and only 2-for-10 from behind the three-point line.  They were 5-for-7 at the foul line.  They had three players score seven points apiece in the game.  Tara Johnson and Jaylyn Cooper tied for the team lead in both points and rebounds with seven and five, respectively.

The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday at LSC foe Abilene Christian at 5:30 p.m.
