Five Straight for Cardinals

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Visiting Eastern New Mexico University could not stop the high-powered University of the Incarnate Word offense and the Cardinals picked up their fifth consecutive victory, 93-75 in Lone Star Conference men's basketball action on Saturday at the McDermott Center. The Cardinals (9-5, 5-1) never trailed in the game and built up a double-digit lead within the first nine minutes of the game.  The Greyhounds (5-9, 2-4) were able to get as close as seven points in the first half, but the Cardinals closed the period on a 5-0 run on a three-pointer by Anthony Horton (League City/Clear Springs HS) and a jumper by Andre Corley (Baytown/Baytown HS) to take a 43-31 into halftime.

In the second half, the Cardinals extended their lead to 20 points as Dionelle Rucker (San Antonio/New Life Christian Academy) poured in eight quick points in the first 4:30.  UIW led by as many as 23 points in the second half before settling for the 18-point win as head coach Ken Burmeister was able to clear the bench.

The Cardinals shot over 50 percent in the game and registered a season high 26 assists.  The Cards have made over half of their field goal attempts in every game of the current winning streak.

Overall, UIW shot 54.1 percent from the field, made 9-of-19 from three-point range and went 18-for-25 at the charity stripe.  Rucker finished with 23 points, eight rebounds and two blocks while hitting 10-of-15 from the field.  Corley came off the bench to pour in a season high 27 points in just 20 minutes of action.  He was 10-of-13 from the floor and knocked down four three-pointers.  Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) was the only other player in double figures with 11 points.  Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) had a fantastic all-around game with seven points, nine rebounds, nine assists and two blocks.  The team had 40 rebounds and committed 13 turnovers.

The Greyhounds shot 35.8 percent from the field, made 5-of-20 from behind the three-point arc and were 22-of-29 at the foul line.  Rafael Love led the team with 17 points and nine boards while going 9-of-10 at the free throw line.  Kyle Lantz added 15 points, including a trio of three-pointers and Jordan Awoye pitched in with 12 points and six rebounds off the bench.  They had 39 rebounds in the game and committed 11 turnovers.

The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Abilene Christian.
