SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Coming off a last second win over West Texas A&M, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team is hoping to add another Lone Star Conference victory when they host Eastern New Mexico on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the McDermott Center.
The Cardinals win against West Texas moved them to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play, putting them in fourth place in Lone Star Conference standings. The Cardinals currently have two players averaging in double figures. Junior
Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) and senior
Ashlyn Green (Irving/Angelina JC) lead the Cardinals with over 11 points per game apiece. As a team, the Cardinals are scoring 62.3 points per game and giving up a league low 59.5 points per game.
Eastern New Mexico heads to San Antonio sitting in eighth place in the LSC with an overall record of 3-11 and a conference mark of 2-4. The Zias have won three of their last four games, grabbing their most recent win against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Ashlee Pierson leads the Zia offense with an average of 6.7 points per game. As a team, the Zias average 33.2 rebounds and have tallied 127 steals on the season.
Last season, the Cardinals split games with the Zias, winning at home by 20 points, but falling on the road by 11 points. After Eastern New Mexico, UIW will hit the road for a conference game against Abilene Christian University on Jan. 15 at 5:30 p.m. in Abilene.
