Heavy rain fell on the teams for the entire match making difficult for both teams to get anything going on offense. The Cardinals (1-3, 1-1) outplayed the Mustangs (1-4-1, 1-0-1) for large portions of the match, but could not find the back of the net. The Cardinals outshot the Mustangs, 7-6 and had more corner kicks.
The deciding goal came a little after the half hour mark. A foul of the edge of the penalty box would lead to the Cardinal's downfall. MSU midfielder Payton Fookes hooked the free kick into the upper left corner of the net, scoring the only goal of the contest and giving the Mustangs the lead at 33:53.
In the second half, the Cardinals picked up their attack firing five shots, but none of them were on target. UIW goalkeeper
Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) ended the match with four saves, three of which came in the second half, but was still handed the loss.
Midwestern State goalie Mallory Whitworth did not have to make a save, but picked up the shutout and the win after playing all 90 minutes.
The Cardinals have their first of five straight road games on September 21 at Texas Woman's in Denton, TX at 7:30 p.m.
