Phillip Mayberry, Chance Dziuk and Tommy Brown all etched their names on the Incarnate Word record book during the recently completed Lone Star Conference track and field championships held in Commerce.
Brown did it again. He turned in a 10.54 in the 100-meter dash and finished fifth in an exceptionally fast field in one of the feature events at any meet. That time tied his own UIW record set just two weeks earlier. He now has the top six times in UIW history.
Mayberry came next for the Cardinals by finishing fifth in the triple jump. His distance of 13.90 meters lengthened the UIW school mark which had been 13.60 meters by teammate Leon Knights.
The third record setter for UIW was Dziuk in the hammer throw. He went 52.38 meters for a third place finish in Commerce. That distance eclipsed his own mark of 51.86 meters. In fact, Dziuk now has the top six marks in UIW history.
While they did not pick up any more provisional marks for the upcoming NCAA Division II National Championships, the Cardinals are in a waiting game for berths in that event. Currently UIW has five individuals and one relay team on the provisional list. The Cardinals have their own “Last Chance” Meet set for May 10 at Benson Stadium. This will be one more opportunity to get onto the NCAA 's automatic berth list.
