Sophomore Chance Dziuk was entered in the discus throw over the weekend at the Cactus Cup meet in Kingsville and when he was finished he had put himself well in the national picture for that event.
He won the competition with a toss of 51.80 meters or 169-11 feet. That was a new UIW school mark topping one of the older marks on the book, 46.94 back in February of 2008.
But better yet that is now the fifth best throw in the nation to date and it puts him squarely on the provisional qualification list for the Division II national championships the final week of May.
In doubling up in Kingsville Dziuk finished 10th in the hammer throw.
Tommy Brown made his presence known in a double effort. He eclipsed his own UIW mark by finishing second in the 100-meters in a time of 10.59. Two weeks earlier he had set the Incarnate Word mark of 10.61 at the UIW Invitational. Brown then moved over to anchor the Cardinals 4x100 relay team which finished second in 41.66. That group included Lamar Edwards-Johnson, Adan Narvaez and Christopher DeWitt.
The Cardinals got another second place finish when Leon Knights cleared the high jump bar at 1.95 meters or 6-04.75. And in the 110-hurdles Edward Williams was third in a time of 15.15.
The Cardinals next go to the Bobby Lane Classic in Arlington on March 23-24.
