WOMEN BEAT CAMERON IN 2OT

It took two overtime periods, but eventually the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team defeated Cameron University, 79-74, on Saturday afternoon at the UIW McDermott Center.

The two teams couldn't decide on a winner through 40 minutes (they were also tied, 33-33 at halftime) and after five more minutes, still didn't have a team with more points than the other. Then in the final five, Incarnate Word outscored the Aggies, 12-to-7, and made some clutch defensive plays in the final moments to secure the win.

The defensive plays at the end were highlighted by senior post Chloe Wallace getting to the right spot to draw a charge twice – eliminating CU opportunities to tie or close the gap.

“Chloe really showed a lot of senior leadership today,” coach Angela Lawson said. “She's had a tough couple weeks, but she showed up big for us today. It was great to see.”

UIW is now 12-11 overall and 7-10 in Lone Star Conference play.

Wallace finished with 14 points and 5 rebounds while Rose Whitehead (11 points) and Jocelyn Jarmon (15 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists) also added double-digit scoring for UIW. Leading all scorers in the game was Ashlyn Green with 24 points (including 8-for-8 from the free throw line) and three steals.

The victory helps keep the Cardinals in the running to be in the Lone Star Conference Women's Basketball Championship at the end of the season – with the top eight schools earning tournament seeds.

The Cardinals will play their last home game of the 2011-12 season on Wednesday evening against Abilene Christian. It will be Senior Night as well as Breast Cancer Awareness Night – where the team will wear their all-pink uniforms again (the uniforms debuted against Cameron).
