The #9 Cardinals (13-3-1) scored early and the result of the match was never in doubt. It was the eighth straight win for UIW over the Rattlers (5-11-1) and concluded an outstanding regular season. Seniors
Julian Brown-Latham (Toronto, CA/UNC-Charlotte),
Abraham Campos (Visalia, CA/Golden West HS) and
Antonio Reyes (San Antonio/Reagan HS) each played the final regular season game of their careers for the Cardinals.
Defender Uros Ceglai (Ljubljana, Slovenia/St. Mary's) scored the game-winning goal for the Cardinals with his header off a free kick from Vincent Bailey (Southampton, Eng./Savio HS) in the ninth minute of the game. It was his second goal of the season.
The score remained 1-0 until
Tenny Adebowale (London, Eng./Filton College) pulled off a nice give-and-go with
Leon Taylor (Dallas/Oral Roberts) for his second goal of the season at 29:56. Less than three minutes later Bailey knocked in a free kick from near the end line on the left side of the box for his team-high 16
th goal of the year.
Freshman Johnathan Camerena (El Paso/Del Valle HS scored the final goal of the game when he stole a ball from the last St. Mary's defender and beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation at 40:17. It was his first career goal.
The Rattlers had one great chance to score that came in the final minute of regulation. Anthony Bustos fired a shot from point blank range that was saved by
Jarred Kahan (Houston/Clear Brook HS). Bustos got the rebound and then shot it off the underside of the bar and had it bounce out where Jack Wolf fired another shot that Kahan caught and cleared out of the box.
The Cardinals entered the week ranked second in the region and will find out on Monday night at 6 p.m. if they have received a bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
