The day wasn't too far gone when Incarnate Word's Sebastien Jaraba-Heffner left his mark on the annual UIW Invitational Track and Field meet at Benson Stadium.
In just the sixth event on the schedule, the junior topped the field to win the 1,500-meters in a time of 3:58.72. That winning mark was almost a second and one-half ahead of his nearest competitor.
Some 20 colleges and universities were on hand at the meet to make it the largest track and field event hosted by UIW. And all collegiate classifications were represented from divisions I, II and III, to NAIA, to junior colleges.
Incarnate Word experienced some other notable performances including sophomore Corey McDonnough powering his way to third in the 400-meters in a time of 49.55. Later sophomore Leon Knights gave the Cardinals a second place in the long jump with a leap of 6.94 meters (22-09.25).
In the other event where contestants leap into the sand box, sophomore Curtis Davis went 13.21 meters (43-04.25) to finish fifth in the triple jump. And over in the throwing areas, freshman Michael Tate tossed the discus 42.01 meters (137-10) which was good for sixth.
After a brief rest and a couple days of workouts the Cardinals head for the Tarleton State Invitational set for March 10 in Stephenville.
