WOMEN'S WINNING STREAK ENDS VS. WT

The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the 2011-2012 season on Thursday night, falling 61-51 in the Lone Star Conference opener for both programs at the UIW McDermott Center.

Incarnate Word (4-1 overall, 0-1 LSC) was led in scoring by an 18-point effort from Ashlyn Green who led all scorers. Also scoring in double figures for Incarnate Word was Katy Cooke with 12 points and three assists.

West Texas dominated UIW in the paint throughout the game – out-rebounding the Cardinals 36-to-25 and out-scoring UIW inside the lane 32-to-20. Incarnate Word also lost the turnover battle, 21-to-17.

WT had three players scoring in double digits.

The 4-0 start to the season was the third for UIW during the years that coach Angela Lawson has been in charge of the program. Had the Cardinals won the game, it would have been the first-ever 5-0 start to a season in program history.

Incarnate Word has never defeated West Texas and is now 0-4, all-time, against the Lady Buffs.

UIW will host Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
