CARDINALS DOWN TAMU-COMMERCE, 3-1

Keri Dawson's free kick in the second half turned out to be the game-winning score for the Cardinals on Sunday. UIW won, 3-1, on the road against Texas A&M-Commerce.

After playing to a scoreless first half on the road against Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday, the University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team scored three goals in the second half en route to a 3-1 victory over the Lions.

UIW (6-3-2 overall, 4-1 Lone Star Conference) got on the board in the 51st minute when Lauren Evans set up freshman Amber Guenther for her third goal of the season (she is second on the team in points with 10). Evans broke away from the TAMU-C defense on the left sideline and crossed the ball to Guenther.

Not even three minutes later, the Cardinals struck again, this time on a free kick by Keri Dawson. Dawson lofted a shot over the Lions' goalie from over 20 yards out for her first goal of the season for the 2-0 lead.

UIW extended their lead to 3-0 in the 66th minute when Sydney Solomon ripped a shot from the top of the penalty area that found the lower right side of the netting. It was Solomon's third goal of the year.

Incarnate Word, however, would be denied their fourth consecutive shutout about a minute later when a Commerce player pounced on a loose ball in the UIW defensive end and set up a teammate who ripped a shot up into the right corner.

The Cardinals will be back home on Friday with a Lone Star Conference game against Eastern New Mexico University at noon at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.
