TERRELL, GUNDERSON GET CONFERENCE HONORS

It was a successful weekend on the field for the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team, tying No. 13-ranked Colorado School of Mines, 1-1, and defeating No. 4-ranked Fort Lewis College, 2-1, in the Heartland/Rocky Mountain Conference Challenge.

Besides keeping the team's undefeated streak going, team captain Michael Terrell (the tournament's MVP) and defender Max Gunderson (named to the All-Tournament squad) were recognized by the Heartland Conference as the Offensive and Co-Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.

Terrell led his Cardinal teammates, now 3-0-2 overall, in two regional matchups. Up against School of Mines, Terrell scored the lone goal for Incarnate Word in a game that went into overtime – the latter part of the game happening in rains heavy enough to cancel games scheduled immediately after. In the next matchup, UIW hosted No. 4 Fort Lewis at Benson Stadium and upset the SkyHawks, 2-1 – UIW getting its first goal from Terrell in the first half when the senior buried a loose ball into the back of the goal. Terrell's two goals against two of the top teams in Division II were his first and second of the season.

On defense, Gunderson and his teammates fought through the wear and tear of playing a 110 minute game in heavy rains and then battled against a fresh opponent on Sunday – Fort Lewis having not had to play its scheduled game against St. Edward's University. Gunderson and UIW's defense allowed just one goal on 14 shots by Fort Lewis – including a goal-saving kick on a ball that had found a hole through a collection of players and bounced towards an open net.

Gunderson shared the honor with St. Edward's goalkeeper Matt Moore.

The Cardinals host Truman State University on Friday at Benson Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m.
