CARDINALS CRUSH ACU IN ABILENE

After dropping a road contest in the final seconds on Saturday, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team left nothing up to chance and crushed Abilene Christian University, 60-44, on ACU's home court on Monday night.

The Cardinals (4-2 overall) had four players in double figures, led by senior guard Nia Torru's 20 points. Fellow seniors LaShae Woodard and Jasmine Smith both added 12 points to UIW's total (with Smith leading her team on the glass with 9 rebounds) and senior post Nikki Brown chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.

The four Cardinal seniors alone equaled the offense by Abilene Christian University and the 44 points scored by ACU (2-3 with two losses coming at the hands of UIW) was the lowest point total scored by Abilene Christian since a 78-43 loss to Texas A&M Kingsville in 2001.

Incarnate Word led 42-28 at halftime, but the game saw seven lead changes in the first half. However, UIW took the lead for good at the 8:44-mark in the first half on a jumper by Brown.

The Cardinals return home to the McDermott Center on Friday for the first part of a UIW-Harding University, women-and-men doubleheader. The women are scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
