With all their pre-season exhibition games out of the way, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team opened up the 2009-2010 season with a road matchup against West Texas A&M University on Sunday, falling to the Buffaloes, 59-50.
The Cardinals (0-1) held WTAMU to just one player in double digits, but all but one player who saw the floor for West Texas got onto the scoreboard.
Hayley Harvey led UIW with 18 points while Nia Torru added 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Ultimately, what did Incarnate Word in was the 27 turnovers (21 were steals) that the Cardinals committed. UIW trailed, 35-29, at halftime and was only able to close within four points at the start of the second half, 35-31.
The Cardinals had opportunities immediately following their first bucket of the second half, but missed a three-point shot and two free throw opportunities in a matter of 30 seconds that could have helped change the tide.
Incarnate Word will remain on the road as they participating in the St. Edward's Shootout in Austin on November 20th and 21st. UIW will face Angelo State and Abilene Christian in the Shootout before heading back to Incarnate Word for the Cardinals' home opener on November 25th.
