University of the Incarnate Word Athletics

2011-12 (Junior):  Cardenas nabbed Second Team all-RMAC honors in the 400 and 800-yard freestyle relays.  She earned First Team RMAC All-Academic Team and CSCAA Scholar All-American honors.  She swam every freestyle event during the year and had strong performances at the UIW Christmas Invitational and at the RMAC Championships.  She swam in the 400 freestyle relay at the NCAA Championships.

2010-11 (Sophomore):  Cardenas earned All-America honors by swimming the third leg on the 800-yard freestyle relay team that took second place and set a school record with a time of 7:27.25.  Her best individual times of the year came at the RMAC Championships where she placed fourth in both the 200 and 400-yard freestyle events.  She anchored the winning 800 freestyle relay team at the RMAC Championships.  She was named to the RMAC Academic Honor Roll.

2009-10 (Freshman):  Cardenas had an outstanding year and was named the RMAC Co-Freshman of the Year.  She earned First Team RMAC honors in the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle relays.  She earned second team honors in the 500-yard freestyle.  She qualified for the national meet in three individual events and two relays.  She earned Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 400 and 800 freestyle relays.

High School:  Cardenas was on the swim team at St. Mary's High School.  She was a top eight State finalist and AIA Academic Athletic Scholar for four years.  She was the National Honor Society Vice President, a National Biology Scholar and a member of the National English Honor Society.

Personal:  Cardenas is the daughter of Sheila Fitzgibbons and is studying biology.  She has two brothers, Patrick and Martin.  Patrick swam at Incarnate Word.  She was born on June 27, 1991.
