Coach Valencia joins UIW as the asisstant coach in August of 2021 from UT-RGV in Edinburg, TX where he assisted with all the throwing events for a regionally ranked WAC throws squad.
The LaJoya, TX (Palmview) native competed for five seasons at University of Houston. While he is best known for his shot put prowess (2019 AAC conference champion) Coach Valencia was a very well-rounded thrower with strong marks in the weight and hammer as well.
He completed his studies (bachelors and master's degree) at UH spring of 2019 and then moved home to begin work at UT-RGV and work in the hotel industry. In his two years in Edinburg, Coach Valencia had a crash course in not only the shot put (as an athlete) but especially the hammer, weight and discus (as he assisted the throws coach). Coach Valencia was still training in hopes of representing his native Mexico in the upcoming Olympics.
The past two years under the tutelage of a well-known coach and among several conference champions and regional qualifiers will help Coach Valencia continue the good work of the throws crew and take it to the next level. Coach Valencia will bring some great competitive experience and energy to the program - he's full of energy and gritty - two fantastic traits for the program.Â
