Tommy Law came to UIW in the fall of 2010 as the Cardinals diving coach and immediately his influence was felt. His protégé, Justin McDonald went out and won the one-meter event at the NCAA Division II National Championships meet.
Law has had success each year with the Cardinals. He has coached a pair of NCAA Division II national champions and then in his first year at the NCAA Division I level he was named the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association's Women's Diving Coach of the Year in 2013-14, an award he has now won three times.
At the 2011 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) meet, McDonald won the 1-meter and was second in the 3-meter events. On the women's side at the RMAC meet, Law saw Emily Haddox set a UIW school record for points before finishing second in the three-meter and then finish third in the one-meter. Quite a year for Law, a year which culminated in him being thrown into the pool when McDonald won the national title.Â
In his second year with the Cardinals, Law once again guided McDonald to All-America honors in both spring board events.
The 2012-13 season saw one of Law's pupils climb the top step at the NCAA Division II national championships. Kali Lents won the 3-meter springboard national title and was the runner-up in the 1-meter springboard. She was also the individual RMAC champion in both events and was named the RMAC Diver of the Meet and RMAC Diver of the Year.
In 2013-14, Law's charges were dominant at the CCSA Women's Championships. Lents won the 1-meter and was second in the 3-meter to earn CCSA Diver of the Meet honors. Kim Foster grabbed third place in both events and Haddox contributed an eighth place in the 1-meter discipline. He was named the CCSA Women's Diving Coach of the Year for his efforts.
The following season, Law picked up a pair of coaching awards after being named the CCSA Men's and Women's Diving Coach of the Year. Lents concluded her career by winning all three diving events and winning the CCSA Diver of the Year award for a second straight season.
A native of San Antonio and a product of Marshall High School, Law received his bachelor's degree from the University of Texas-San Antonio. His degree is in interdisciplinary studies with a specialization in kinesiology. He also holds an equivalency minor in Russian.
Prior to Incarnate Word, he was the coach for the San Antonio Divers and he continues to coach the Alamo Area Aquatics Diving team and for the Northside ISD. Along the way he has been district and regional diving coach of the year and he has tutored multiple AAU national champions.
He is diving chairman for TISCA and in 2008-09 he was on the NISCA All-American selection committee. He is a member of both TISCA and NISCA, San Antonio Sports and the Community Olympic Development program.
He has been a member of the Sea World "Viva" diving company. Law and his wife Elaine reside in San Antonio.
