John Moreau joined the UIW staff in October of 2014 as the first fencing coach in the school's history. He was tasked with starting both a men's and women's Fencing program.

UIW’s Fencing Program has qualified athletes to every NCAA National Championship since beginning competition in 2015. A feat which was recognized by the American Fencing Coaches Association naming Moreau as Varsity Coach of the Year in 2018.

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) named Moreau the inaugural Head Coach of the Year in 2022. Moreau received this award after hosting both the NCAA West Regional and MPSF Championship while leading the team to a second-place finish at the inaugural league meet. 

Moreau came to UIW with an impressive background in fencing. He was the head coach of Texas State University’s Fencing Club that won the State championship a record 15 times. In addition, he served as a fencing coach for the US Modern Pentathlon Olympic Training Center in San Antonio. As an elite coaching staff member for USA Pentathlon, he has taken teams to several World Championship events.

Moreau’s competitive career includes seven National Team Epee titles from 1980-2001, five Fencing World Championships, including bronze medals in 2002 and 2005, two Olympic Fencing Teams (1984, 1988), 10 US Olympic Sports Festival appearances, 13 Olympic Trials (modern pentathlon, 6 and fencing, 7) and in 2003 he defeated Olympian Soren Thompson to win the Division 1 Epee title at the age of 52, oldest in US Fencing.

Moreau is the #1 ranked Modern Pentathlon International Judge for the United States and has officiated at major competitions around the world, including Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012.

Moreau comes to UIW from Texas State University with a Master’s Degree in exercise and sports science where he was a faculty member for over 30 years. In addition to his other pursuits, he is an eighth degree black belt in Kajukenbo karate. Moreau and his wife Natalia, a former nationally-ranked Mexican fencer, have three children. Their youngest child, Monet, is a graduate of UIW and was on the women’s swim and fencing teams.
