Bilal Batley enters his first season as the assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of the Incarnate Word. “I am looking forward to successfully contributing my efforts to the University of the Incarnate Word," said Batley when he joined the program in the Spring of 2014.
Batley was previously an assistant men's basketball coach at Paris Junior College during the 2013-14 season. He helped lead the team to a regular season and conference tournament championships, finishing with a record of 26-8. The team made a national tournament berth finishing in the Sweet 16.
Batley was as an assistant basketball coach at Navarro College from 2010-12. The 2011-12 team won the Region XIV tournament championship and made a national tournament appearance. The 2010-11 team achieved a 20-win season and an All Academic Team Award, earning above a 3.0 grade point average.
In 2009, former NBA player and coach John Lucas hired Batley as head of player development with his company, John Lucas Resources. Batley specialized in skill development, working with basketball players to prepare them for the NBA Draft, and with veteran NBA players looking to improve their skill sets. Batley also assisted in the Life Skills Department, which helps players excel in the community and become better people.
Batley was an assistant director of basketball operations at the University of Kentucky in 2009. The Kentucky staff was responsible for assembling the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation, and accomplished an Elite Eight appearance. He held the same role the previous year at the University of Memphis, when the team earned a Sweet 16 appearance.
Batley was a graduate assistant coach at Indiana University in 2007-08. The Hoosiers had a successful season led by future NBA players such as Eric Gordon, Jordan Crawford, and D.J. White.
Batley was a student basketball manager at the University of Oklahoma from 2004-06, making two NCAA tournament appearances and helping the Sooners earn a Big XII Conference Championship.
Batley began his career as a student assistant coach at Navarro College from 2001-04.
Overall, Batley has been a part of eight 20-win seasons, three conference championships, four NCAA tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 appearance, two NJCAA tournament appearances, nine NBA first round picks, four NBA lottery picks, the No. 1 NCAA Recruiting Class in the nation, and has worked with over 75 NBA players.
Batley earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Oklahoma in 2007. He earned a Master's degree in sports and leisure commerce from the University of Memphis in 2014.
