College athletics is fun and exciting. Here at the University of the Incarnate Word, the atmosphere is exciting, as the university has 21 stellar sports programs. Student-athletes, coaches, administrators, alumni, fans, and boosters all play a role in the success of Incarnate Word Athletics.
There are many ways in which to “win” in college athletics but it is more than outscoring the opponent. Winning also means “Playing by the Rules”. That includes rules of eligibility, academic standards and NCAA regulations involving amateurism, benefits, financial aid, and recruiting.
This site is intended to provide a basic understanding of NCAA rules and regulations for current and prospective student-athletes and those who support the UIW programs as boosters. While not all inclusive, this information is meant to provide guidance in many situations and should help avoid inadvertently violating fundamental NCAA policies.
Please keep in mind that NCAA rules and regulations have not been imposed by some unknown entity. They have, for the most part, been developed by, presented to, and voted on by the individual member institutions that make up the NCAA. They allow for a “level playing field” among the many colleges and universities which comprise the NCAA membership.
Adherence to these rules is mandatory to maintaining the integrity of fair play and competition.
